The New York Times article “Pace of Sign-Ups Under Affordable Care Act Blows Past Prior Years” gives statistics on the number of people who have signed up for the Affordable Care Act in the past few weeks. In fact, it provided a staggering statistic on how more than 600,000 people signed up for the insurance plan in the last week. This discredits Trump’s assertion that the marketplace is collapsing. This proves how crucial this plan is for contemporary American society. The plan has allowed young adults to gain insurance and has made society dependent on the health care system produced by the act. The Republican party’s attempts to repeal the act will only leave millions uninsured and unable to cover medical bills, especially those who are terminally ill or elderly in low-income neighborhoods. Te repeal only seeks to serve the wealthy.
It is interesting to note that this increase is so large. This come right after another failed attempt by the Trump administration to repeal the contentious Affordable Care Act. It seems as if the American people are standing up for the bill in a non-violent way. If Americans are willing to fight for the bill in this way, instead of resorting to violence like many other protests, they stand a chance of guarding their right to accessible healthcare. To create a more fair plan though, Americans should look to the healthcare policies of countries that have been more successful in this regard, particularly Belgium and the United Kingdom.
